iPhone Face ID Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It

If Face ID is not working on your iPhone, follow these steps
to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Step 1: Check Basic Conditions

  1. Clean
    the Face ID Sensors
    :
    • Use
a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the top of your iPhone, where the
TrueDepth camera is located. Ensure it’s free of dirt, smudges, or
      debris.
  2. Remove
    Obstructions
    :
    • Make
sure nothing is covering your face (e.g., sunglasses, masks not
compatible with Face ID) or the TrueDepth camera.
  3. Check
    Lighting Conditions
    :
    • Ensure
you are in adequate lighting. While Face ID works in various conditions,
very low or overly bright light might cause issues.

Step 2: Restart Your iPhone

  • Restarting
    can resolve minor software glitches.
    • For
      iPhone X or later
      :
      1. Press
and hold the Side button and either Volume button until
        the slider appears.
      2. Drag
the slider to turn off the device.
      3. After
30 seconds, press and hold the Side button again until the Apple
        logo appears.

Step 3: Update iOS

  • Ensure
your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS:
    1. Go
to Settings > General > Software Update.
    2. If
an update is available, download and install it.

Step 4: Reset Face ID

  1. Go
to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Enter
    your passcode.
  3. Tap Reset
    Face ID
    .
  4. Set
    up Face ID again:
    • Tap
Set Up Face ID, follow the on-screen instructions, and move your
head slowly in a circle to complete the scan.

Step 5: Check Face ID Settings

  1. Navigate
to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Ensure
Face ID is enabled for the features you want (e.g., iPhone Unlock, App
    Store, etc.).
  3. Make
sure the option Require Attention for Face ID is toggled on or off
    according to your preference.

Step 6: Test Face ID in Safe Mode

  • Safe
Mode can rule out third-party app interference.
    1. Restart
the iPhone and hold the Volume Down button during startup.
    2. Test
      Face ID functionality.

Step 7: Check for Hardware Issues

  • If
the above steps don’t work, the issue may be hardware-related. Check:
    • If
      your iPhone has physical damage.
    • If
the TrueDepth camera is misaligned or broken.

Step 8: Contact Apple Support

  • If
the problem persists, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store.
    1. Use
the Support app or go to the Apple Support website.
    2. Schedule
a Genius Bar appointment if hardware repair is needed.
